“I was holding anger against my father who was abusive and refused to pay for my education when I was in school. My mother had to work very hard to educate me and my sister and I grew up hating my father. The mere mention of his name brought bitterness in my heart and I knew it was slowly destroying me. I carried the resentment even after I became a father. Then one day I decided to forgive him. At least through him I learned what to avoid and was inspired to never hurt my kids. I really forgave him and today hold no resentment in my heart. By forgiving my father I feel I now live a much happier life and have become a better father.”

When we forgive people we are freeing our energy that is trapped in our mind and causing harm to self. Easier said than done, you may tell me, but the fact is keeping anger or hatred in mind leads to bitterness that is self destructive.
Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness but is a way to let go and lead a normal and healthier life. We find people struggling all around us to make ends meet, raise kids or take care of elderly people in their house. So if someone shouts at you at work he may already be suffering at home or is stressed out about something.
Forgiveness also does not mean we tolerate rude behavior or suffer injustice. We may point out the person’s fault and take necessary steps to protect ourselves from a person who has lost his senses. However, we should still forgive the sin and overcome the resentment that is the result of any act by the person who was rude to us.
Ultimately we are forgiving a person for our own benefit and by simply saying in our mind “I forgive you” you will feel infinitely better than previously when you were nurturing a grudge against the person who caused hurt to you. Once you forgive, you can focus your energy in a more constructive direction and you will again be in a positive cycle.
If somebody has done wrong to you, today is the day you forgive the person. Sit quietly in a room and say aloud “I forgive you” by keeping the person’s image in your mind. You will immediately raise your spirit to a higher level and become a step closer to living a more peaceful life. Continue this practice for a few days till you are completely free of any bitterness and negativity against that person.
