If you are reading this, you are probably searching for ways to improve your will power or want to help someone keep their resolve. First of all understand the fact that you are not a tree and therefore you can change. All you need is will power, which is right there inside you. Having said that let us see how best to help you increase will power.
Identify what is bothering you
No problem can be resolved until and unless you are sure exactly what is bothering you. Sit down in a quiet corner and mediate for a while. Let the thoughts flow through your mind and notice what is going inside you. Most of the times people want to have the will power to control their “symptoms” such as smoking cigarettes, while the real problem may be dealing with breaking up with a partner. Take a pen and paper and note down all your thoughts, and finally identify why you require will power in your present moment.
Know your patterns
Will power implementation becomes much easier once you know your behavioral pattern. We will take the example of smoking cigarettes to explain things here. Once we have identified why you smoke cigarettes it becomes easier to stop this habit. Note down when you feel like smoking intensely. Is it when you miss your partner the most? Or is it when you get a yelling from your superior at work. Know why you crave for a cigarette to cultivate will power to stop this habit.
Make a plan
So now we know exactly when you need to turn to a cigarette. It is now time to make a plan. As you reach out for the cigarette when you have emotional distress, try to substitute it with acts such as meditation for five minutes, chewing a gum or talking to a pleasant person during that time. Keep doing this for a week and notice how you are feeling. The initial few days will be difficult but after seven days it will become much easier.
Motivating self becomes easier when you keep a reward for yourself. Tell your brain that I will treat myself to a nice pair of shoes if I am successful in keeping up my resolve for one whole week. Your subconscious mind believes what you say to yourself and thus keep affirming several times in a day:
“It is very easy to stay away from cigarettes”
Repeat this statement as often as possible and praise yourself each time you are successful in curbing your urge to smoke. It is also important to keep a picture of the “new you” in your mind while you work towards releasing your habit.
A new and beautiful life is waiting for you as soon as you gather will power to give up the habit that is harming your body and mind.
